Sister Necklace 2, Shibuichi

$385.00

Based on the traditional marine hardware, with hand braided cord. Hand carved master, lost wax cast in Rhode Island. The sister clasp will naturally hang in the front. This kind of mechanism is also referred to as a gangent hook, kissing clip, or brummel hook. When I was a kid my father first showed me how to make them using bolt cutters and chain links. The sides pass through each other when the slots are lined up precisely perpendicular to each other. It takes a little practice at first, and soon becomes natural. The cord is 16 strands, braided in house using a kumihimo loom. I knot it to the clasp using staggered Matthew Walker knots with whipped ends. The dark and white cord options are braided from nylon twine which I hand wax in house. The brown (not pictured) is hand dyed prior to waxing, and fades very slightly over time. The white cord will fade to grey with wear, based on your lifestyle. The tarred option is braided using nylon twine that is treated with tar for the maritime industry. Like raw denim, the tarred cord will bleed somewhat during the first week or two of wear, and the high spots of the braids texture will fade over time. All color options will stretch a bit over time. 18” circumference including clasps. If you would like a different length (up to 24”) please leave a note at checkout. Longer lengths available, please contact me prior to ordering to discuss. Color images to come. Please note, this item is made to order.  A six to eight week delivery time is to be expected.
