Pelican Clip, Hand Dyed & Spun Indigo Cord

Pelican Clip, Hand Dyed & Spun Indigo Cord

An original closure mechanism, inspired by the traditional marine hardware of the same name. Hand carved master. Lost wax cast in Rhode Island and hand finished in house. To open the clasp, push the cord up over the end of the hinged arm. There is no need to push extra cord through the opening to do so. To close, simply push the cord back in place. When closed, any force that goes into the mechanism helps to close it even more securely.

Cord is hand-dyed as thread, prior to being hand spun, all in house.  The base material is 100% cotton, and the indigo dye used is organic.  I dye it using a 1-2-3 indigo/calcium hydroxide/fructose recipe, with 4+ dips.  Spinning is executed using a hand-built ropewalk.  The resulting cord is dense and smooth, with just the right amount of give and flex.  Because it is thread-dyed, the rich color runs entirely through the material.  Fade examples to come!  The ends are spliced using a traditional sailor's short splice, seized with a red polyester thread, and the tails trimmed long to fray away with wear.   Suitable for 24/7 wear, including in the ocean or shower.

Please note, indigo has a tendency to 'bleed' blue onto other garments during the first week or so of wear; be cautious wearing it with lite-colored shirts during this break-in period.

Fits wrist circumference

To determine your wrist size measure at the thinnest point, snug but not tight.  Listed sizing is based on wrapping the cord as illustrated below. By experimenting with different wrapping methods the fit can be fine-tuned considerably.  For more information on sizing please visit the FAQ page under the INFO tab. Custom sizes are available for a modest fee; contact me to discuss.
